Alternative Nobel Award Recognises Laureates

Sweden’s Right Livelihood Award, which is commonly referred to as the “Alternative Nobel Award”, has recognised four laureates who have gone above and beyond serving their communities.

The award recipients were revealed via the organisation’s website on Thursday, 28 September, where the honourees were thanked for “standing up to save lives, preserve nature and safeguard the dignity and livelihoods of communities around the world.”

A Kenyan environmental activist named Phyllis Omido was recognised “for her groundbreaking struggle to secure land and environmental rights for local communities while advancing the field of environmental law.”

Eunice Brookman-Amissah, a Ghanaian diplomat and trained physician, was honoured for her work in women’s productive rights, including pioneering safe abortion access and tackling harsh laws on the subject.

Two organisations were also recipients of the award, the first being the advocacy group called Mother Nature Cambodia which was praised “for their fearless and engaging activism to preserve Cambodia’s natural environment”.

Finally, the SOS Mediterrranee group were also honoured for their life-saving operations on the Mediterranean sea that rescues refugees in dire need of help.

An official awards ceremony will be held in Stockholm, Sweden on 29 November to properly honour the laureates.
